The last night of Contact Special began in a simple and discreet manner. Large amounts of people gathered early into the building this night. By 01:00am, 900 people had entered. Hoping this might happen as the result of the previous week, I had earlier decided to delay the point where I increased the music to a danceable pace so that the people on the dancefloor could began dancing all together. It worked, the moment they heard a stronger 4/4 beat the room exploded -- we had begun the last chapter of Contact Special. We danced our way through Classic Techno, Minimal Techno, Dub House, and other styles all the way up until 12:30am and to the first live performance act. Sub Space took their position on a special smaller stage in front of the DJ stage. They were positioned nearly 8 feet away from the audience, close enough to see into their eyes. Sub Space had prepared for this evening with a live set that sounded like a space ship on a voyage to far away land. Their live had all that you could imagine: Suspense, mystery, warmth, maturity, aggression, class and other feelings. They did a great job -- I can easily see thet have a great future ahead of them.
After the performance of Sub Space, we had a 20 minute transition before setting up the stage for Elektrabel. In this time, I had the opportunity to create a conceptual DJ set that involved informational video and a narrative soundtrack where people were explaining what it feels like to be abducted by Aliens. It was my chance to further explain the Contact Special concept. All worked fine.
After experiencing a few small technical difficulties, Elektrabel took the room on a journey through his definition of Techno Music. Instantly, the room exploded to his first track. He kept that intensity through his entire set. It was quite amazing. We knew Elektrabel was something unique but, we had no idea that he would be that good!. His live set was just simply raw uncompromising Techno Music. One blazing track after another. Most of it I had never heard before. The audienced loved him. For both, Sub Space and Elektrabel it was their debut here in Japan. It was one of those rare moments that helps to define the local dance music scene and that people tend to remember for decades to come.
After Elektrabel, there was no way I'd let to intensity go away so, I had planned to escalate the atmosphere even more all they way up unitl 03:00am (The Abduction). In my record box, I had set aside a number of records just for this transition period. We arrived just 5 minutes short of 03:00am, I brought down the music to classical string arrangements and sound effects that climaxed at exactly 03:00am. In this time, the lighting person filled the room with fog so that the first flash would be extreme. On the exact second of 03:00am, I let the first track loose -- a enormous flash of white light hit like a bomb. All I could from my DJ position and in front of me were massive circles of rainbow colored rings and huge flashes of blue, green light form above. I heard from people that were on the dancefloor that they could see the force of sound coming from the speakers pushing and retracking the fog to and away from the speakers -- this must have seemed really interesting. OK, so all this went on for about 30 minutes while I kept the intensity of the music very high and fast. We arrived at the end of the final night at 05:00am at a high point. Many had not left the dancefloor since the party began. It was one of the best audiences I had ever played for. I deeply enjoyed it and hope that I might experience it again. Thanks to all the people that helped make the entire Contact Special project a reality. To all the people in the other cities of Fukuoka, Sapporo, Nagoya, Kanazawa, Kyoto and Osaka. I look forward to playing for you all next year.

Contact Specialの最終日はシンプルで控えめに始まった。今晩は多くの人が早い時間から集まってきた。1時までには900人が来ていた。先週の結果が良かったからだろうと期待しつつ、僕はダンスフロアの人たちがみんな同時に踊り始められるように、ダンサブルなペースに持っていくのをわざと遅めにすることをはじめから決めていた。思惑は当たり、強い4つ打ちのビートを聞いたとたん、フロアは爆発した・・・Contact Specialの最終章が始まったのだ。クラシック・テクノ、ミニマル・テクノ、ダブ・ハウスや他のスタイルで最初のライブ・パフォーマンスが始まる12時半までダンスし続けた。Sub SpaceがＤＪステージの手前に特別に作られた小さなステージでスタンバイした。オーディエンスからは２メートルくらい、ちょうど彼らの目を見るのによいポジションだ。Sub Spaceはこの日、まるで遠い場所へ旅にいく宇宙船さながらのライブ・セットを用意していた。想像できるすべての要素がそこにあった。サスペンス、ミステリー、暖かさ、成熟さ、攻撃性、上品さ、などなど。すばらしい仕事をした・・・僕は彼らにすばらしい未来が待っていることを確信した。
Sub Spaceの後、Elektrabelのステージを準備するため20分の時間があった。このとき、エイリアンに連れ去られた感覚を体験してもらうビデオと語りのサウンドトラックを使用したコンセプチュアルなＤＪセットを披露することができた。Contact Specialのコンセプトをより説明するチャンスだ。すべてはうまくいった。
ちょっとしたテクニカル・トラブルの後、Elektrabelが彼の定義するテクノ・ミュージックへの旅に皆を連れて行く。あっという間にフロアは彼の一曲目で爆発した。セットを通してずっとこの緊張感を彼は持続した。とてもすばらしかった。Elektrabelがユニークなものを持っていることは知っていたけれど、ここまで良いとは思っていなかったのだ！彼のライブ・セットは単にシンプルな、生な妥協のないテクノだった。燃えるような曲が次から次へと続いた。ほとんどの曲が初めて聞くものだった。オーディエンスはElektrabelをすっかり気に入った様子。Sub Space, Elektrabel両者にとって今回が日本デビューであった。日本のダンスミュージック・シーンを定義することになる、そして長年人々の記憶に残る数少ない瞬間だったと思う。
Elektrabelの後、この緊張感を失うわけにはいかない。僕は3時の「連行」までさらに雰囲気をエスカレートさせていく。レコード・ボックスの中に、この瞬間のためにとっておいたレコードがいくつかあった。3時5分前になったとき、クラシカルなストリングアレンジの曲をかけて、3時ちょうどのクライマックスへ向う効果をつくりあげた。このとき、ライティング担当者はスモークで部屋を満たし、最初のフラッシュが究極になるようにした。3時ちょうど、最初の曲をかけると白い光の洪水が、爆弾のように僕たちを襲った。僕のいるＤＪブースからは巨大な虹のような光の輪と上からの青、緑の巨大なフラッシュしか見えない。ダンスフロアにいた人たちにはスピーカーからの音がスモークを押し出して動いている様子が見えたと聞いた。とてもおもしろかったに違いない。そう、音楽の緊張感はかなり早く、高くなっているなか、30分間この状態は続いた。5時になり最終日の終わりが近づいたときは最高潮に達していた。パーティが始まってから一度もダンスフロアを離れなかった人たちもたくさんいた。僕がプレイしてきた中で最高のオーディエンスだったよ。心から楽しんだし、また体験したいと思う。Contact Specialを現実にしてくれた人たち、ありがとう。そして、他の都市、福岡、札幌、名古屋、金沢、京都、大阪の人たちありがとう。また来年プレイするのを楽しみにしている。
