Saturday, Oct. 10, 2004 Time Sensitive Japan Tour -- Sendai, Japan
Ripple Club

Sendai is located in the northeast region of Japan. A very nice place -- very clean with lots of green trees. Noticed many tall young girls. Sendai is the capital of Cow Tongue Beef -- very delicious and a large variety (I never knew this). On this Time Sensitive Tour, I had planned ahead of time to try to make the most of all of the dates. What I will try to do is attempt to bring more about where I am from (Detroit) into the scenario and what the people would see in the visual images throughout the night. Things like: landscape images of Detroit, interviews of Detroit Artist, a little bit of Electronic Music history, etc. Using the Pioneer DVJ-X1 made this task very possible. The party became full early and the people were very exciting. I noticed a few very good local DJs that was worth a inquiry.
Very nice people and I enjoyed being there. Thanks to all the people that attended -- see you next time.


仙台は日本の東北地方にある。とてもよいところだ。クリーンで緑に囲まれている。女の子の背が高いのに気がついた。仙台は牛タンが有名で、とてもおいしく、いろいろな種類があった。（今まで知らなかった）。このTime Sensitiveツアーでは最大限のことができるように事前準備をしている。僕の出身地（デトロイト）をシナリオにおりこんでパーティ中、ビジュアルで表現しようといているんだ。たとえば、デトロイトの風景、デトロイトのアーチストのインタビュー、エレクトロニック・ミュージックのちょっとした歴史など。パイオニアDVJ−X1を使うことでこれが可能になった。パーティは早い時間から混んできて、みんなとてもエキサイトしていたようだ。とてもいい地元のDJたちが気になって、連絡をとりあうことにした。
いい人たち。とても楽しめました。きてくれた人たち、ありがとう。また次回会おう！

ソナーサウンド・シネマにてJeff Millsが新たにエレクトロニック・サウンドトラックを書き下ろした バスター・キートン『The Three Ages』を上映、本人による解説、オーディエンスとのＱ＆Ａを行いました。また、ガーデンホールのエントランスにはJeff Millsのインスタレーション・アート『Mono』の展示も。 [from AXIS Staff]

いよいよ『TIME SENSITIVE -"Opening Party for Jeff Mills Residency" 』がスタートしました。このBlogで、毎週のレジデンシーの様子をリアルタイムでUPしていきます。
当日はとり急ぎ、携帯から画像のみをUPし、後日Axis Staffがコメントを書込みます。もちろん、Jeff本人の感想も別途UPします！
記念すべき第１回目のゲストは大御所Francois K。『リアルタイム』をテーマにライブ・パフォーマンスでクラウドを熱狂させてくれました。ライブの最後には"サプライズ"ともいえるJeff Millsの"The Bells"をライブ・ミックス！　二人の固い友情を感じる夜でした。
またこの日は、「sonarsound tokyo 2004」に出演するために来日していたカール・クレイグが遊びに来てくれていました。

Time Sensitive w/ Francois K

The evening began in doubt due because of the constant raining and the overpassing typhoon (Thus far, #22 for Japan this year) Railways, airports and businesses were closed due to heavy winds and heavy rain. Though the attendance inquires were quite high for the first friday of the residency, the weather was a closely monitored factor that we all hope would turn out well. At the the opening of the door, a few partygoers made their way to dance floor. Within one hour, the dance floor was about 2/3 full and I had begun to heat up the beats a little higher. The crowd reacted giving me the signal to push it further. The visual images of Glamoove were fantastic. Try to imagine a very clear view of the stars. So clear that it is possible to distinguish shapes. Spread over three hugh video screens, this was the only light that lit the room most of the night.

Here we go!. Theoretically, the entire residency begins here. Much attention was paid to this moment as we were honored that Francois would not only accept to open the residency but would even do something that he had never done in his long and very rich career. His first Live Performance......ever!. His set-up was small and efficient. The layering of multiple sequences were organic and constantly uplifting. I suppose the best way to describe what he did is to refer his performance to the motion of a ocean or sea. A swirling, mixing, and interacting particles that constantly moves in a sole force in a strong outward motion. It was pure sonic. His set lasted for about 1 1/2 hours and the crowd was very happy. Very interesting things happened that night.

Carl Craig dropped by and hung out with Francois and I, it was good to see him.

Thanks to all those that attended last friday, your participation gives all of us much more needed confidence for the existing nights to come.

通過する台風22号による絶え間ない雨にたたられ、夜は不安まじりに始まった。鉄道、空港や店舗などはクローズしはじめていた。レジデンシーの初日としては問い合わせの数はかなり多かったのだが、客足は天気に左右されやすい。僕たちは天気回復することを願った。ドア・オープンと同時に数人のパーティ・ピープルがフロアに入ってきた。一時間もたたないうちにフロアの2/3が埋まり、ビートを少し上げてヒートアップさせる。オーディエンスはもっとプッシュしてほしいというシグナルを送ってきた。Glamooveによる映像はすばらしかった。クリアな星空を想像してみてほしい。星の形がわかるくらいにクリアな空。それが巨大なビデオスクリーンいっぱいにひろがって、この晩フロアを照らす唯一の光となったのだった。

1:00am MCのKta-Brasilによる挨拶とFrancois Kの紹介。
行くぞ！　ここからレジデンシーが始まるといっていいだろう。フランソワはこのオープニングパーティの出演を快諾してくれただけでなく、彼の輝かしいキャリアのなかでも初めての挑戦に多くの注目が集まった。初のライブパフォーマンス！　彼のセットアップはコンパクトで機能的だった。数々のシーケンスを重ねていく様子はオーガニックでアップリフティング。彼のパフォーマンスをもっとも上手く説明するには、海の動きのようだったというのがいいかもしれない。渦巻き、ミックスし、常に動いている部分がインタラクトしてひとつの力となり、力強い外へ向っていく動きになる。ピュア・ソニック。約1時間半のパフォーマンスに観客はみんなハッピー。この日はとても興味深いことが起きたのだった。

来日中のカール・クレイグがフランソワと僕を観に立ち寄ってくれた。

先週金曜日来てくれた人たち、ありがとう。僕たちにこれから先3週間への大きな自信を与えてくれた。

Hello. For those of you that are tuning in for the first time, let me welcome you and explain what this journal is all about. The adventurous team at Excite approached me with the idea to create a documentative blog of the daily and weekly activites that fill my often crazy travel, tour and studio schedules. As I cascade from country to country on behalf of Techno Music, you will be to read and see what things I encounter and experience. From this, it should give you a clearer perspective on the hectic life I'm lucky enough to have and the inner workings in the Electronic Music World.

I recently completed a seven (7) european city tour appropriately called "Music" with the very gifted DJ Laurent Garnier. The last two cities, Lusanne, Switzerland and Barcelona, Spain were especially interesting for the both of us as these two cities are known for very healthy Techno Music scenes. Upon our arrival, we quickly dropped our bags at the hotel and made our way to the national radio station for a 2 hour live mix show. Lusanne is a paradise for those who like clean/fresh air, delicious lake fish, superb wine and a obsession for Nestle Chocolate. We were fortunate to stay for 2 days at a posh hotel facing the lake called Le Palace Hotel. The massage spa is highly recommended . Lusanne is a quiet place, very picturesque. The natives are reserved and discreet but, like to converse once initiated. The owners of the venue "The Mad" club were very hospitable and charming. They invited all of us to a afternoon on the lake. It was absolutely beautiful. No, no that's not me water skiing . The night at the Mad Club was just as exciting, the club became crowded shortly after the doors opened. Good people, good music and a great time.

Next day: Barcelona has great second hand record shops. Mostly located near the Ramblas, its not uncommon to spend 7 or more hours jumping from shop to shop and sorting through countless bins of vinyl. We arrived in the early afternoon, conducted local interviews at the hotel and made our way to the local radio station for a live radio show with a audience of 200 people. Returned back the hotel and slept the night through the morning. Barcelona has a great Music scene. Nurtured by the effects of the Sonar Event every June and a constant flow of International and domestic DJs, Barcelona and the entire country has become notoriously known as "Red Hot".

The party in Barcelona was at a club called "Discotechique". The inside structure resembles the famous Studio 54 in New York. The party got off to a quick start with people filling in rather quickly and ready to dance. A unexpected surprise to see a group of guys sporting homemade "J.Mills" T-shirts.Thanks guys, the checks are in the mail! Laurent and I even had a very special guest, DJ Angel Molina come by and play a few classics that made the crowd go crazy.

The next day gave me no mercy of rest!. Tired from the party, we slid into Paris around early afternoon. Dropped off the luggage at the hotel and made our way to the location for a soundcheck where I was to perform later that night and debut my most recent film project of a new film score of Buster Keaton's "The Three Ages" during Paris' annual city-wide event called "The Nuit Blanche" (The White Night). Sound check went great!. The space was the front and facade of a Roman-like building in the center of Paris, a massive video screen covered the huge columns. Very impressive. After the soundcheck, we quickly went to Radio Nova for a interview about the "Music" tour and then back to the hotel for early dinner and a hour or so of organising for the performance.

Showtime: When I arrived back at the space, there were already 7,000 people that had gathered to see the debut of the film. A short drink with a few friends and we made our way to the stage. The response from the audience of the film was fantastic, we were all very happy about this. After the showing of the film, using a Pioneer DVJ DVD Turntable, I mastermixed moving images and sounds to create a interesting collage of concepts. Everything worked well and the night was a big success!

Again, no answer from the sleep fairy!. The next morning, a early flight to Chicago for 2 days.

I've just arrived in Tokyo. "Konichiwa". I'm very glad to be here now. We've been planning for this month of the year since February 2004. In these few days before the first friday of the residency at Womb Club in Shibuya, we have many meetings for last minute arrangements.

11:40pm: Earthquake (3.0) shakes the room where I'm writing this, right now!. Wow!. Nice view of Tokyo Tower too!!

Hello. 　このページに初めて来た人たち、ようこそ。この日記は『エキサイト』の冒険心あふれるチームが僕の毎日の行動、クレイジーな旅行、ツアー、スタジオのスケジュールをこなす様子をドキュメントするアイディアを持ち込んでくれて実現しました。テクノ・ミュージックの名の下、世界中を旅している僕が出会い、経験することをお伝えします。エレクトロニック・ミュージックの世界の内側と、幸運にも忙しく動きまわるチャンスに恵まれた僕の様子がよりクリアに伝わることと思います。

ヨーロッパ７都市をとても才能のあるDJローラン・ガルニエとまわった"Music"ツアーがやっと終了しました。最後の２都市はスイスのローザンヌとスペインのバルセロナでしたが、共にとてもヘルシーなテクノ・シーンがある場所なので大変楽しみにしていました。ホテルに到着したら、荷物を置いてすぐにラジオ局へ直行。２時間のミックス・ショーをやりました。ローザンヌはクリーンで新鮮な空気、美味しい魚、素晴らしいワイン、そしてネスレのチョコレートを求める人たちには最高の場所です。僕たちはLe PalaceHotelという湖に面したおしゃれなホテルに２泊しました。マッサージやスパがとても有名なところです。ローザンヌは静かなところでとても美しい。地元の人たちはおっとりとしていますが、いったん話始めると急に元気になります。"The Mad"クラブのオーナーは大変チャーミングな人です。午後、湖へと僕たちを招待してくれました。ものすごく美しい場所でした。水上スキーしてるのは僕じゃありませんよ。Madクラブでの夜はドア・オープン直後から混雑して盛り上がっていました。グッドな人たち、グッド・ミュージックそしてグレートな時間。　

次の日。バルセロナにはグレートな中古レコード屋があります。ランブラス通りの近くに集中していて、数え切れないレコード箱を次々と見ているうちに７時間以上たってしまう、なんてことも珍しくありません。僕たちは午後早い時間に到着し、ホテルでは地元メディアのインタビューをし、200人の観客が待つラジオの生番組収録のため、ラジオ局へ向かいました。そしてその後ホテルに戻り就寝。
バルセロナにはグレートな音楽シーンが存在します。毎年６月に行われるソナー・イベントの効果と、インターナショナル、国内のDJが常にパーティをしている影響でしょう。スペインの中でバルセロナは"Red Hot"と知られています。

バルセロナのパーティは「ディスコテック」というクラブ。内装はニューヨークにあったスタジオ54のようです。すぐに満員になり皆ダンスの準備は万端。グループで手作り”J.Mills"Tシャツを着ている人たちにはびっくりしました。ありがとう！　Tシャツ代は後で送るからね！　ローランと僕はスペシャル・ゲスト、エンジェル・モリーナを迎えて、彼がクラシックスを数曲かけたらオーディエンスは完全にクレージーに。

次の日にも休む暇はなし！　パーティの疲れとともに、午後早くにパリに移動。ホテルに荷物を置いて、その晩パフォーマンスする場所でのサウンドチェックへ向かいました。パリ市中で毎年行われる"The Nuit Blanche" (白夜）というイベントの中で僕が最近サントラを手がけたバスター・キートン監督の"Three Ages"のデビューを飾るのです。サウンド・チェックは問題なし！　パリ中心にあるローマ時代の建物のような博物館の正面の大きな柱に巨大なビデオスクリーンを用意。とても印象的でした。サウンド・チェック後、"Music"ツアーに関するインタビューのため急いでラジオ・ノヴァに行き、ホテルに戻って早い夕食をとり、パフォーマンスの準備を1時間くらいしました。

ショウタイム！　イベント会場へ戻るとすでに7,000人くらいの人がいて、映画の初公開を待っていました。友達と一杯飲んで、ステージへ向います。映画に対するオーディエンスの反応は最高。とてもいい気分です。映画放映の後、パイオニアDVJ（DVDターンテーブル）を使い、映画からの映像と音をコラージュしたマスターミックスをやりました。すべてはうまくいき、大成功です！　

そしてまた睡魔に答えている時間はありません。翌日早くシカゴに戻る飛行機にのりました。

10月5日午後3時：　
東京に到着。「こんにちわ」。来れてとてもうれしいです。今年2月から企画してきたのです。渋谷Wombでのレジデンシー初日までの数日間は最終チェックのためのミーティングが目白押しです。

午後11時40分：
地震！　これを書いている今部屋が揺れてます！　震度３。
ああ！　東京タワーの美しい景色が部屋から見えます。
