Kyoto: Metro Club
Metro University Lecture

Recently, I lectured at a special event presented by the venue, The Metro in Kyoto, Japan about Electronic Music I had the opportunity to explain to a full audience who I am, where I’m from, what I do and about ideas and visions I have for the future holds for Electronic Music. After the lecture, the interviewer/translator and I took questions and answers from the audience. Thanks to the great staff at Metro and to the people that attended. I hope it was informative and interesting for you.

京都のメトロのスペシャル・イベントとして、エレクトロニック・ミュージックに関するレクチャーをした。僕がどこからきたのか、何をしているのか、エレクトロニック・ミュージックの将来に対しての考えやビジョンを満員の聴衆に説明することができた。レクチャーのあと、通訳と僕は質疑応答をした。メトロのグレートなスタッフたち、来てくれた人たちありがとう。興味深く、ためになる内容だったことを期待する。




Kyoto. Metro Club
Time Sensitive Tour

Factually, the Metro Club and I have a quite long history. I’ve been coming to this club off/on for almost 10 years. Consistently, the best parties for me while touring outside of Tokyo have been in Kyoto and Sapporo. The crowd has always and remains to be jungle-like which is particularly interesting when you consider the conservative pace of Kyoto.
As I tour around Japan at this time, I am taking opportunities to try out different ways of integrating video and moving images into the DJ set via 2 Pioneer DVJ-X1 DVD Turntables. I discovered many things that night – hope the audience noticed them too. Thanks to the wildlife – See you next time.


メトロと僕とはかなり長い付き合いになる。10年近く機会があるたびにこのクラブへ行っている。常に、東京以外のツアーでベストなパーティは京都と札幌だ。オーディエンスはいつもジャングルのようにワイルドで、京都の保守的なペースを考えるととても興味深い。今回日本ツアーでは、パイオニアDVJ-X1（DVDターンテーブル）を使って、ビデオや映像をDJセットに様々なかたちでとりこむことにトライしている。この夜、僕は多くのことを発見した。君たちも気づいてくれていればいいけれど。ワイルドなみんな、ありがとう。また次回会おう。

ジェフ・ミルズによる1日限りのスペシャル企画レコード・フリーマーケット。Jeffが使用していたAXISのサンプル盤、アセテート盤、未リリースサンプル盤をはじめ、Jeffが海外でみつて購入してきた大推薦盤などのレア盤を自身で販売。お客さんの質問に答えたり、作品に関して説明したり、レコード店主として頑張りました。19時からはALEX FROM TOKYO氏、ディスクユニオン千布氏、MAYURI氏、サードイヤー弘石氏、一般のお客様も参加して、Jeffの司会による「アナログ盤の未来」に関するディスカッションが行われました。 [from AXIS Staff]

Still floating from the Time Sensitive party w/ Octave One, we flewinto Kanazawa in the late afternoon. The 1 hour flight allow justenough time to fall asleep but, not enough time to fully recharge so,upon checking in to the hotel, sleep was the immediate concern. Thecity was full of outside visiters because of the changing of theseason. Just waking up for the quick soundcheck at the Eight Hall and apit stop at Freshness Burger, we made our way back to the hotel for 2more hours of sleep. 1:00am Show Time: I really enjoyed this party. Iwish I could have played a few hours more. We experienced a lot of newideas that I had been thinking about that night. In trying to make eachof the Tour dates more conceptual, I think we are discovering a newphase of the term "Techno Party". Thanks to the promoter and all thepeople that came out and made the night. Octave OneとのTime Sesntiveパーティの余韻が残っているうちに、僕たちは土曜日の午後、金沢へと飛んだ。1時間ちょっとのフライトはうたた寝するには丁度よかったが、完全にリチャージするには短かった。ホテルにチェックインしたらすぐに眠ることに。金沢市内は季節の移り変りで多くの観光客でにぎわっていた。起きてからエイトホールでのサウンドチェックへ行き、Freshness Burgerで軽く食事を摂り、それからホテルに戻ってまた2時間ほど眠った。1:00am ショウタイム。とっても楽しめるパーティだった。あと数時間プレイしてもよかったくらい。この夜、今まで考えてきた色々な新しい試みをしてみた。ツアーの全てのパーティをコンセプチュアルにすることで、"テクノ・パーティ"の新しい側面を発見できたのではないかと思う。プロモーター、来てくれた人たち、ありがとう。また次回会おう！

Time Sensitive w/ Octave One/Ann Saunderson at Womb

We were optimistic that the weather conditions would not affect thesecond Friday of the residency. Luckly, the weather was perfect and sowas the fantastic performance of Octave One w/ Ann Saunderson and thecrowd that attended. Thanks to everyone -- You are truly making TimeSensitive a very special event.

Earlier in the night, there was a debut of a special short documentaryabout the beginnings of Detroit Techno. Consisting of interviews withkey names like Carl Craig, Derrick May, Richie Hawtin and others, eachDj/Artist explained how they discovered Detroit Techno and how itaffected their lives. The visual images that covered 3 large screenshanging over the stage showed landscape and street life of Detroit thatwas breathtaking to say the least. It show a side of Detroit that mostrarely see, a dreamy romantic view that resulted in a mysterioussurreal affect. The beauty of the city. Thanks to Glamoove, again.

The club came to its capacity rather quickly with much anticipation forthe night to kick in to a higher gear. 90% of all music played duringthe party was Detroit Techno and I think the people realized it earlyon. I played from the booth to allow the stage area to be exclusivelyfor Octave One. 1:30am Showtime: After MC Kta-Brasil and I welcomed andintroduced the concept of the night, with very little delay we proudlyintroduced Octave One. The crowd went crazy. Octave One performed forabout 1 hour. Ann Saunderson and her sultry voice joined the stage thatresulted in a wonderful impactful climb up to the infamous hit of"Black Water". The crowd answered with a "sonic burst" of welcome. Thenight was tremendously enjoyable and set a milestone in the concept ofTime Sensitive forever. Thanks again to Ann, Lawerence, Lenny/Hope andLynell. See you around Christmas Time.
レジデンシー2回目は天気に左右されることはなさそうなので楽観的だった。幸運にも天気は完璧で、Octave OneとAnnSaundersonのパフォーマンスも同様。来てくれた皆も最高だったよ！　どうもありがとう。君たちがTimeSensitiveを本当にスペシャルなイベントにしてくれた。

夜早い時間には、デトロイトテクノにまつわる、短いがスペシャルなドキュメンタリーのデビュー上映があった。カール・クレイグ、デリック・メイ、リッチー・ホウティンなどキーパーソンによるインタビューで、それぞれのDJ/アーティストはいかにして彼らがデトロイト・テクノと出会ったか、それが彼らの人生にどのような影響を与えたかを語っている。３つの大きなスクリーンに映ったイメージはめったに見られないデトロイトの風景、ドリーミーでロマンティックな一面を写していて、ミステリアスでシュールな効果をだしていた。街の美しさ。Glamooveの人たち、ありがとう！

クラブは早いうちにいっぱいになってきて、期待も最高潮。パーティでかけていた曲のうち90％はデトロイト・テクノだったが、みんな、早くからそれに気付いていた様子。Octave Oneがステージを目一杯使えるように僕は上階のブースからプレイした。1:30am ショウタイム！　MCのKta-Brasilと僕がその日のコンセプトを説明したあと、すぐにOctaveOneを自信をもって紹介した。オーディエンスはクレイジーに盛り上がっていた。Octave Oneの約一時間のパフォーマンスの後、AnnSaundersonと彼女のセクシーな歌声がステージに参加して、大ヒット曲"BlackWater"で素晴らしい最高潮へと達した。オーディエンスは大声援で答えてくれた。とっても楽しい夜だったとともに、TimeSensitiveのコンセプトが永久に刻み込まれた瞬間でもあった。Ann, Lawrence, Lenny/Hope そしてLynell、どうもありがとう。クリスマスの頃にまた会おう。

Time Sensitive　2nd Week:"Detroit Techno Revenge" を目前に控え、Jeff Millsと２週目のゲストOctave Oneが行ったチャットを公開！

JeffMills (JM）：　Hey man, what`s up in the "D"? Haven`t been able to get over there for almost a year. I ran into K. Alexi in Berlin last weekend. He`s living there now. Are you guys ready to do the "do"?
Lenny/Lawernce Burden（LB）：　Working on RNG album working on the show and trying to stay out of trouble.
JM：　I heard that.
LB：　Absolutely. Ready to put it down to the pavement.
JM：　I`ve been trying to get in the studio but, travelling has been tough. Can you believe that I haven`t even seen that mixing console since we shot the Exhibitionist!!. Crazy huh?
LB：　Wow! Its been just the opposite with us, we've been chained to it and gigging maybe twice a month. Do you miss making music or do you prefer performing?
JM：　I would love to spend months in the studio!!!
OK, so everything is set for the Detroit Night at Womb. We`ll use alot of street images throughout the night -- I`ll play from the booth to give you guys all the room you`ll need to get down.
LB：　Thanks, need some room to get down and sweat!
JM：　Is there anything extra you`ll all need?
LB：　Towels, water and hyped crowd! O yea brew-ha's! Is that where all the new records have been coming from, you spending months sometime ago in the studio?
JM：　You know, I record music in short burst -- something like 15-20 tracks in a week. I think I record so much becuase I know that I won`t have much time. The machine are on all the time. I`m sure its similar to you guys.
LB：　Its also like that when we record. What are you on? Ginseng plus, doing that many tracks in a week. I never thought of myself as real Detroit, but I guess I am. It will be alot of fun.
JM：　I`m not sure but, I think this will be the first real Detroit Night in Tokyo. What is the performance like -- does lenny do the splits.
LB：　Lenny thinks he's James Brown Jr.
JM：　ha ha - maybe a random noise version of "cold sweat"?. Finally, got to listen to you new stuff -- excellent as usual!!.
LB：　We should take the Detroit on the road. Don't you think?
JM：　This has been a dream of many in that city. I think everybodys too busy travelling.
LB：　Thanks. It feels good to have such an icon as yourselve to say so.
JM：　It would be interesting. Actually, it might be possible given the right climate and circumstances.
LB：　Yea, that's true we see each other more in airports around the world than at home in the city. One day it'll change though.
JM：　Hey man, I got to go feed the cows. We`ll see you all in a couple of weeks. Need anything, let us know via e-mail or leave message at our office.
LB：　I do agree!
JM：　Later.
LB：　Cool. Much respect and we're out!

JM：　Hey Man, "D"（デトロイト）はどうだい？　もう一年くらい行ってないけど。先週ベルリンでK.Alexiにばったり会ったよ。今ベルリンに住んでるそうだ。 ところで準備は整ったのかな？
LB：　ショウでやるRNG (Random Noise Generation)のアルバムの曲を今準備中だよ。トラブルがないようにと思ってるけど。
JM：　そうだね。
LB：　そうだよ。やる気まんまんだ。
JM：　僕はスタジオに入りたくても、DJが多すぎて…。Exhibitionistの撮影で使ったミキシング・コンソールをあれ以来触ってもいないんだよ。信じられる？
LB：　ええっ!?　僕らは逆だ。スタジオに釘付けで、ギグは月に2回くらいかな。
音楽制作したいと思わない？　それともDJのほうが好き？
JM：　ああ、スタジオに何ヶ月もこもりたいよ!! 　OK,　Wombでの"Detroit Techno Revenge"の準備は万端だよ。デトロイトの街の様子の映像を夜中いっぱい使うんだ。僕はブースでプレイするから、ステージを存分に使ってくれ。盛り上げないとね。
LB：　ありがとう。盛り上がって、汗かくスペースが必要だから。
JM：　他に必要なモノはある？
LB：　タオル、水、それから盛り上がったオーディエンス！　よぉし！ 　ところで新しいレコードはどうなってるの？　何ヶ月も前にスタジオで作ったものを今リリースしてるの？
JM：　僕はちょっとの時間にものすごい勢いでレコーディングするんだよ。一週間で15～20曲くらい。 レコーディングは時間がないとわかっているからいっぺんにたくさんやるんだ。機材はいつもONの状態だよ。君たちもそうじゃない？
LB：　うん、僕たちがレコーディングするときも似たようなものだ。
なにやってるの？　朝鮮人参とか？　一週間でそんなに曲作って。 僕らはあまりデトロイトという自覚はなかったけれど、そうだね。楽しみだ。
JM：　わからないけど、たぶん東京での本当の意味での初めてのデトロイト・ナイトになるはずだ。どんなパフォーマンスになるのかな。Lennyはスプリットやるのかな？
LB：　Lennyは自分がジェームス・ブラウンJrだと思ってるからね。
JM：　ハハ。 "Cold Sweat"Random Noiseバージョンやってくれよ。ついに君たちの新作をきくことができるんだな。いつものように格好いいんだろう。
LB：　デトロイト・ツアーをやるべきだ。そう思わない？
JM：　デトロイト出身の人たちにとっての夢だね。普段はみんなそれぞれのツアーが忙しすぎる。
LB：　ありがとう。君のような人にそう言ってもらえてうれしいよ。
JM：　おもしろいね。きちんとした環境が整えば可能だと思うな。
LB：　今はホーム・タウンで会うよりも空港であったりするほうが多い。そのうち、それも変わるさ。
JM：　OK,もう行かなくちゃ。東京で会おう！　必要なものがあればメールするかオフィスにメッセージを残しておいてくれ。
LB：　わかった。
JM：　じゃ。
